Before you can perform Umrah, Saudi Arabia requires proof that you've had certain vaccinations — and the certificate to show for it. For pilgrims travelling from The Gambia, the most important is the meningitis vaccine. Why vaccinations are required for Umrah
Each year millions of pilgrims from every corner of the world gather in Makkah and Madinah. That gathering, while a profound blessing, also makes it easy for certain illnesses to spread. To protect pilgrims and the wider community, the Saudi Ministry of Health sets vaccination requirements that every visitor performing Umrah must meet. Meeting them isn't just a rule — it's part of travelling responsibly and caring for your fellow pilgrims.
Meningitis (ACWY) — the mandatory vaccine
The key requirement is the quadrivalent meningococcal ACWY vaccine (sometimes written ACYW135). It protects against four strains of meningococcal disease and is compulsory for all Umrah pilgrims. A few important points:
- It must be the quadrivalent ACWY vaccine — a single-strain version is not accepted.
- It should be given at least 10 days before you arrive in Saudi Arabia.
- For the 2026 rules, an accepted conjugate vaccine must have been received within five years, or an accepted polysaccharide vaccine within three years.
- You'll receive an official vaccination certificate — keep it safe, as you may need to show it.
Keep the original certificate with your travel documents and confirm that the vaccine name and administration date are recorded correctly.
Other recommended vaccinations
Beyond the mandatory meningitis vaccine, a few others are sensible — especially for older pilgrims or those with health conditions:
- Routine vaccinations up to date — for example polio and measles (MMR).
- Seasonal influenza, often recommended given the crowds and close contact.
- Seasonal requirements — for certain periods Saudi authorities may ask for additional vaccines. We confirm the current list for your departure.
