What to pack & ihram

A practical checklist for the climate, the rites and your time in the two holy cities — written for first-time pilgrims and families.

Pack light, pack prepared. Your time in Makkah and Madinah is precious — the right essentials let you focus on worship, not logistics. Here's a practical checklist for first-time pilgrims and families travelling from The Gambia.

Ihram

Ihram is the sacred state a pilgrim enters before performing Umrah, along with the clothing worn in that state.

  • For men: two white, unstitched sheets (one around the waist, one over the shoulder). Bring a spare set.
  • For women: modest, plain clothing that covers the body; the face and hands are left uncovered during the rites.
  • A belt or money pouch for ihram, and unscented toiletries (scented products are avoided in ihram).

For the climate

  • Light, breathable clothing for the heat.
  • A refillable water bottle and electrolytes — stay hydrated.
  • Sunglasses, a small umbrella for shade, and unscented sunscreen.
  • Comfortable slip-on sandals, plus a small bag to carry them during Tawaf.

Health & essentials

  • Any personal medication, plus a small first-aid kit.
  • Copies of your passport, visa and travel documents (digital and printed).
  • A prayer mat, tasbih, and a small Qur'an or app.
  • A power bank and universal adapter.
Medical insurance is included in every Golden Umrah package, and our representatives are reachable around the clock if you need anything during your stay.
